My memories of my Nathanar’s husband

What strikes me about my Nathanar’s husband most is his golden heart – he was so full of love for everyone and he always wanted to share whatever he had with others around him. In fact he played an important role in running around and finalizing my marriage.

Once his brother’s wife Jayam and I came to Vedachala gardens (from our house in TSV Koil Street). On seeing us he informed us “ thavaladai thattierukkain, eduththukongo (I have prepared Thavaladai. Please take)”. I promptly told Jayam “ you are his brother’s wife and I am his wife’s brother’s wife and we both are equally entitled to eat what has been made by him and we both laughed and ate the tasty thavaladai. I have to state here that no one can prepare thavaladai of that taste. He cooked better than any woman on the earth.

One day Lakshmi mami brought a big jackfruit and gave it in Vedachala gardens. He quickly cut it into 2 halves, removed 10 C@qkqf – sulais: put it in a container and got up leaving the half-cut fruit in the middle of the hall saying, Raghavanukku palapazham pidikkum. kuduthutu vandudaren (Raghavan likes jackfruit. I’ll give these to him and return)’ - that was his love for his brother. You can not find a brother of that kind anywhere.

Vanaja had delivered Urmila in Gosha Hospital (Kasturibai Gandhi Hospital, Triplicane). Since we were in Triplicane at that time, I used to bring coffee in the evening and my husband used to take it in the morning. At 4 PM he would anxiously wait for me to come and the moment he saw me he had a broad smile on his face and said that he knew I would be there at exactly 4 with coffee.

He was the epitome of patience and even if my nathanar (Kamala Srinivasan) got angry he had that uncanny knack of dissipating her anger.

Like Mahabharatham, we can go on talking about him. I will only say,’ Kathaikku Sujatha, vazkaikku Srinvasa Iyengar (Sujatha (famous Tamil writer) was a role-model for writing stories, Srinivasa Iyengar was a role-model for living one’s life)’.

Sundaravalli Srinivasan (Sunda mami)
